Hoops: Jupiter C Grant Pelchen commits to FAU

By Jeff Greer

As he stood toe-to-toe with North Carolina-bound Dwyer center Joel James, Jupiter big man Grant Pelchen slowly but surely proved he had Division I potential.

Those performances, plus another impressive year of development, earned Pelchen a scholarship offer to FAU, which he verbally accepted Thursday. The 6-foot-10 senior would be the first Palm Beach County native to play at FAU since Xavier Perkins, a St. Andrew’s standout, played two seasons under FAU coach Matt Doherty. He’s the second commitment FAU has for its next class — the Owls also secured a commitment from New Jersey guard Chris Jenkins.

Pelchen (6-foot-9, 240 pounds) was a Post All-Area honorable mention choice after the 2011-12 season, functioning mostly as a shot-altering post player and effective rebounder for a Jupiter team won District 9-8A before losing in the regional quarterfinals. He gave Dwyer’s James all he could handle in the three games between the two rivals, blocking Dwyer’s 6-foot-11 center multiple times in each matchup. Pelchen’s offensive game — he averaged 7.2 points a game last winter — is a work in progress, but he provides FAU a big body for its 2013 class.
