Softball: Palm Beach Gardens 3B Sydney Jones commits to Southern Illinois

By Jeff Greer

Another Palm Beach Gardens softball player is headed to the next level.

Gardens third baseman Sydney Jones, a rising junior, verbally committed to play college softball at Southern Illinois, a Division I program in Carbondale, Ill. Jones caught the attention of SIU this summer after performing well on the travel-ball circuit. She’ll play third base and catcher at SIU, and will enroll there for the 2014-15 school year.

Jones was a key reserve on Gardens’ state-championship 2011 team, and started at third base in 2012, when the Gators rose to No. 1 in the national high school softball rankings before losing to Jupiter in an intense Class 8A regional semifinal. She batted .310 — admittedly a tough number considering her normally sharp bat — with a .915 fielding percentage, and is expected to play a key role on Gardens’ 2013 team, which will consist of several newcomers.

All verbal commitments are non-binding until the student-athlete signs a national letter of intent.
