Girls basketball: Dwyer C Kai James commits to Florida State

The top girls basketball player in Palm Beach County has made her college decision.

Dwyer senior Kai James gave Florida State coaches a verbal commitment on Thursday. James, a 6-foot-5 post, is a four-star recruit rated a 95 overall by ESPN HoopGurlz. She is the third-ranked post player (22nd overall) in the 2013 class. She is the fourth-ranked player in the state.

James, the centerpiece of a Dwyer team that includes Georgia commit Sam Glodis and star sophomore Keyanna Harris, won a gold medal in August with the U.S. at the FIBA Under-17 Women’s World Championships in Amsterdam. Making her international debut, James averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds in eight minutes per game.

She also considered Georgia Tech, Florida and Oklahoma. Her brother, Joel, is a freshman forward at North Carolina.

James, her teammates and the rest of a talented crop of Palm Beach County players will be featured in The Post‘s 2012-13 girls basketball preview, which will run in Sunday’s paper.
