Glades Central senior Greg Beckford OK after motorcycle accident

From a room at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Glades Central senior Greg Beckford pondered the question coming from the other end of the telephone.

“We’re in the game,” he responded.

That was Beckford’s answer Friday morning when his coach, Roosevelt Blackmon, asked him for a message to his teammates. It was his way of saying he’s OK after a motorcycle accident last Sunday, his declaration he’ll be there in spirit during Friday’s Muck Bowl at Pahokee.

“I told him we’re cheering for you to get well,” Blackmon told The Post. “I tried to cheer him up by telling him he’s got to be at practice on Monday.”

Beckford sustained severe head trauma and severe road rash in a motorcycle accident in LaBelle around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, a police report said.

According to the report, Beckford drove a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle owned by his father, Greg Sr. The younger Beckford hit a large rock in the middle of Sycamore Blvd. in LaBelle while traveling at an estimated 45 mph. The bike wobbled and flipped over several times along with Beckford.

Beckford, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported by Medflight to Lee Memorial, where he remained on Friday.

It’s unclear if Beckford, a 6-foot, 240-pound offensive tackle, will play again this season. But the Raiders, looking to win their fifth straight Muck Bowl, will keep No. 52 in their thoughts tonight.

“The kids know he’s not here, so they’re going to play a little extra harder,” Blackmon said.
