Greg Bryant is one of the biggest high school football stars playing in January’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He’s one step closer to perhaps being the biggest name in the game.
Bryant, a standout running back at American Heritage, on Wednesday was named one of the 16 nominees for the U.S. Army Player of the Year award, given each season to the best high school football player in America. The six finalists will be revealed on Nov. 28, and the winner announced at the U.S. Army Awards Dinner on Jan. 4, the week of the All-American Bowl.
Among the other finalists are Tampa-Wharton defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, Yulee running back Derrick Henry and Lake City offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil. The top-rated recruit in the 2013 class, Robert Nkemdiche, is also a nominee.
Bryant has 1,293 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns for the 10-0 Stallions, who start their quest for a second consecutive state title on Friday against Hollywood-Chaminade. The 5-11, 210-pound Bryant has produced those numbers against one of the toughest schedules of opponents in the country, including wins over Seffner-Armwood, Atlantic, Dwyer and West Monroe (La.).
He’s reportedly down to Auburn, Florida State, South Carolina and Oklahoma, to which he was committed for several months before backing out just before the season started. Miami recently reached out to him, and he’s previously expressed interest in Alabama and Georgia.
