Football: Fort Pierce Westwood dismisses head coach

By Jeff Greer

Gene Clemons won’t return as Fort Pierce Westwood’s head football coach, the TCPalm reported on Friday.

Clemons, who was 2-15 in two seasons as Westwood’s coach, was caught off-guard by his firing, which came during a meeting with Westwood Principal Mallissa Hamilton. Westwood will be looking for its fifth head football coach since 2007.

“There was no elaboration (regarding an explanation),” Clemons told the TCPalm. “I was told I was no longer going to be the coach and I got a letter saying they were going to recommend not reappointing me. Say what you want, but I got fired.”

Westwood’s administration didn’t respond to the TCPalm’s requests for comment, but did release a statement.

“After further consideration, the administrative staff at Westwood High School has made the decision to not recommend Mr. Gene Clemons for re-appointment in the supplemental position of head football coach for the 2013-2014 school year,” the statement said. “His status as an English/drama teacher at Westwood High School is not affected by this decision.

“Westwood High School will be posting the open position for head football coach immediately with the intention of filling the position in time to supervise the offseason program and spring football.”
