Spanish River football coach Rod Payne steps down

By Jeff Greer

Spanish River two seasons ago had its most successful campaign in a long time, winning four games and placing a star player at a BCS school.

The Sharks’ program took a step back in 2012 with first-year head coach Rod Payne at the helm. Now it’s time for them to rebuild again. Spanish River Principal William Latson confirmed Payne’s resignation Wednesday. ESPN 760 first reported the move. Payne was 0-10 in his only season in charge.

Latson said he and Payne agreed this was the best time for Payne to step aside, as it would allow the school to immediately begin its coaching search.

“There is no bad blood or issues with the school,” Latson said in an email to the Post. “He simply needed to put himself in a different position for his family’s good, and I understand that.”

Spanish River lost 26 games in a row before its 4-6 campaign in 2011. The Sharks graduated key players from that team, including quarterback Taylor Schnaars and receiver Reggie Love, who now plays at Wisconsin. They also lost head coach Ray Berger and much of his staff. River will now begin its second head-coaching search in as many winters.
