Royal Palm Beach WR JoJo Williams to Grambling, plus updates on three teammates

By Matt Porter

Grambling State head coach Doug Williams knew he needed a big receiver. When he came across an email containing a highlight film of 6-foot-3, 180-pound JoJo Williams, he snapped him up.

Williams committed to Grambling on Friday, becoming the first Royal Palm senior this year to commit to play college football.

Royal Palm Beach assistant coach Jon Stellman said Williams, who caught 31 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns as a senior, worked hard in the classroom to get that opportunity.

“He wasn’t struggling academically, but he was on the border,” Stellman said. “That’s why his recruiting was slow. I sent out a final push and Doug jumped on him. He got back to me right away.”

Stellman said Grambling is also heavily interested in offensive lineman Craig Smith, but they’re not alone. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 325-pound tackle, has offers from Florida A&M, Alcorn State and Stony Brook. All three programs are very interested, Stellman said.

Elsewhere, the interest between Middle Tennessee State and cornerback De’Andre Simmons (5-11, 185) remains mutual. Simmons plans to visit the school’s Murfreesboro, Tenn. campus in the coming weeks. A handful of FCS schools have shown interest.

Stellman said quarterback Ant McGrew, who put up 1,388 rushing and passing yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, is still short of qualifying.

Williams, Smith and Simmons were second-team Post All-Area selections. McGrew made honorable mention.
