Girls soccer: Palm Beach Central star Yulie Lopez doubtful for state semis

By Matt Porter

Palm Beach Central star Yulie Lopez made a dramatic return from injury on Tuesday, but it does not appear she will do it again.

Broncos coach Tom Dawkins said Lopez, who injured her left ankle late in Class 5A regional final win over Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, will “probably not” play Friday in Central’s state semifinal match at Miami-Lourdes.

The injury was originally thought to be a torn Achilles’ heel, but Dawkins said a doctor’s examination showed Lopez suffered a “bad sprain.”

Lopez, who has signed with perennial Final Four program Florida State, got tangled with an Aquinas player late in the first half of Tuesday’s win. She missed the second half and overtime periods, but returned to score on a penalty kick. Central advanced to its first state semifinal with a 3-2 win in PKs.

Central’s state semifinal match with Lourdes will be played 7 p.m. Friday at Miami-Christopher Columbus High.
