Cardinal Newman TE Matt Burke signs with Purdue

By Jeff Greer

Cardinal Newman tight end Matt Burke harvested no mystery or surprise on national signing day.

The 6-foot-6, 215-pound senior inked a national letter of intent to Purdue, as expected after his mid-January commitment to the Boilermakers and their new coaching staff. He chose Purdue over Boise State, Colorado, USF, Cincinnati, San Diego State, UMass and several Ivy League programs.

Burke signed in Cardinal Newman’s media center with classmate Devonte Brown, who’ll play at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College next school year.

“It got to be stressful at times, but I’m happy with my decision,” Burke said. “It feels great.”

Burke starts a new workout program at Athletes Advantage, a local training facility, this weekend. He planned to get his eating and exercise plan from Purdue early Wednesday morning. As a tight end, he’ll play both from a three-point stance and line up as a receiver.

“It’ll be a mixture of both,” Burke said. “I feel I’m ready to step in right away. I guess I’ll find out in August.”
