Signing Day: Check out the best outfits and quotes from north county

By Jeff Greer

National signing day never disappoints, especially if you enjoy drama.

Down south, Atlantic defensive tackle Keith Bryant promised to shock the world, but he signed with Florida State, the program many sources indicated Bryant would pick long before signing day. Up north, there was no shortage of drama, from Dwyer defensive end Malik Brown’s turn to Tennessee or ex-Seminole Ridge coach Matt Dickmann’s stunning return. But the best part of the day was the fashion.

Oh, the fashion.

Check out some of the best iPhone photos from today’s ceremonies at Cardinal Newman, Dwyer, Gardens, Seminole Ridge and Suncoast. I didn’t get good shots of Matt Burke’s flannel Purdue hat or Seminole Ridge running back Silas Spearman’s crispy clean tuxedo vest and bow tie. But I did get a few others …

Seminole Ridge defensive tackle Kyle Shortridge, who signed with Louisville, rocks a star-centric new buzz.

Rayfield Dixon shows off his Minnesota haircut.

Suncoast DT Ke'Tyrus Marks keeps it cool with a sweater-and-tie combination. He signed with Arkansas.

Check out the suits on Dwyer's Malik Brown (left, signed with Tennessee) and Jonathan Moxey (right, signed with Boise State).

To match his starry mohawk, Kyle Shortridge did his best Rick Pitino impression.

Rayfield Dixon, in a direct competition with Shortridge to see "who will be the freshest one here," rocked a Minnesota-themed outfit.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

Seminole Ridge LB Rayfield Dixon on his outfit: “Kyle and I had a little competition earlier to see who will be the freshest one here. My mom actually helped me out with this, I won’t lie.”

Dwyer CB Jonathan Moxey’s exchange after signing with Boise State: “It’s on the other side of the country. Wherever I go, I’ll have to adapt to change, so why not go big? … [me: ‘Boise State’s been famous, kind of like the Gonzaga of football. Did you ever think you’d be going there?] Never in a million years did I think Boise State would recruit me. I watched them on TV since I was a little boy. Them coming to school my junior year, it was ridiculous. [me: Do you like potatoes?] (Laughter) Yes, very much. Very much.”

How much did Dwyer DE Malik Brown talk to Jonathan Moxey about recruiting? “Every. Day. He was calling me, asking for advice. I tried to help him as much as I could … He really wanted to know what would make you want to go to a school … I pretty much told him a place where you can find a family, that likes you for you and won’t change your position when you get up there … Tennessee was all him. I didn’t know.”

Dwyer coach Jack Daniels on Malik Brown: “He came into my office and went straight to the bathroom. He had a rough time with it.”

Malik Brown: “I entered a contract with Coach Marrone and Syracuse. As you all know, when a contract changes, it becomes void.” Read more here.

Seminole Ridge coach Matt Dickmann, as he surprised his former players at their signing-day ceremony: “How about I say it in person?” Read more here.

Ke’Tyrus Marks: “I told my dad when I was 5 years old my goal was to play in the SEC. It brought me to tears this morning. It’s very emotional. God is good.”

Matt Burke: “It’s kind of a mixture. I could be hand-down one play or split out on the next.”

Frank Brown: “Five minutes from signing, I got nervous. I was like, ‘Man, this is real.’ The schools that passed up, they’ll regret it.”
