One familiar name on the roster Louisville released this week: Leroy Kelson.
Kelson, a linebacker from Dwyer High, will walk on at Louisville. He joins his former Dwyer teammates Gerald Christian and Robert Clark, both redshirt juniors who transferred from Florida.
Kelson attended Mississippi State after graduating from Dwyer in 2011, but did not play. Louisville lists him as a redshirt sophomore.
In 2009, Kelson was a reserve on a Dwyer defense that included stars Matt Elam, Christian, Clark, and Curt Maggitt. The Panthers rolled their way to a 14-1 season and the Class 4A state title. Kelson had 56 tackles during the regular season, second on the team.
He was an all-state player as a sophomore while playing for Inlet Grove. He transferred to Dwyer after that season.
Kelson was listed at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds as a high school senior. His mother, Ladi March of Jacksonville, said her son has “grown two inches and packed on 30 pounds” since then.
Adding Kelson gives Louisville 31 players from Florida, six from Palm Beach County or the Treasure Coast. In addition to Clark and Christian, the Cards have senior linebacker Deon Rogers (Treasure Coast), junior cornerback Terrell Floyd (Port St. Lucie) and redshirt sophomore center Mike Romano (Treasure Coast).
Nine of the 17 players in the Cards’ 2013 signing class are from Florida, including former Seminole Ridge defensive tackle Kyle Shortridge.
