Football: Spanish River hires Summit Christian’s Bill Caesar as new head coach

By Jeff Greer

Spanish River’s third head football coach in three years will be Bill Caesar, who spent the past three seasons as head coach at Summit Christian and was officially informed of his hiring Friday afternoon.

Rod Payne left Spanish River after a disastrous 2012 season, and school administrators hoped to move their football program in a completely different direction with their next hire. Caesar, who coached three seasons at Summit Christian, takes over a Spanish River program that’s had three 0-10 seasons in the past four years.

Summit Christian, which plays in Class 2A, was 10-20 with Caesar at the helm. His first team, in 2010, finished 1-9, but his teams were 9-11 over his final two seasons there.

Payne came to Spanish River in March 2012, taking over for Ray Berger, who had back-to-back 0-10 seasons before breaking through with a 4-6 campaign in 2011. Berger felt he’d left the program in good shape. Drama and turmoil shadowed Payne’s nine months at River, as his team lost all 10 of its games by an average of five touchdowns and rumors swirled about his coaching practices.
