Baseball: The Post’s top 10, stats leaders, games to watch for Monday, March 25, 2013

By Matt Porter

Heading into spring break, one puzzling team has shaken up the rankings, while one mid-tier program showed its strength in a loss. Here’s how we see the area:

The Palm Beach Post Top 10

1. Jupiter (12-0) Allowed 12 runs in last eight

2. Palm Beach Gardens (13-3) Pitchers rounding into form

3. Palm Beach Central (11-3) Ran into hot Dwyer pitcher

4. Benjamin (12-2) Two aces, dominant lineup, good depth

5. King’s Academy (8-6) Arms must be more consistent

6. Wellington (7-7) Gave Gardens a run

7. Park Vista (10-2) Surprising loss to Seminole Ridge

8. West Boca Raton (9-2) Ran winning streak to seven

9. Atlantic (8-6) Favorite in Lake Worth tournament

10. Dwyer (5-7) The area’s most puzzling team

On the bubble: Trinity Christian (9-5), John I. Leonard (7-5), Suncoast (6-6), American Heritage (6-9).

Best of the Treasure Coast: Martin County (11-1), John Carroll (13-3), Jensen Beach (9-4)

The most interesting result of the week was Dwyer’s 5-0 win over Palm Beach Central. The Panthers, our preseason No. 1, were clinging to the No. 10 spot before sophomore Tom Szapucki threw a one-hit shutout against the second-ranked Broncos. So what now? It’s hard to drop Central, since any team can run into a hot pitcher. Dwyer hasn’t played consistently enough to move up — and lost later in the week to Trinity Christian, a bubble team. Given Central scraped by another bubble team, American Heritage, we feel comfortable moving Central to No. 3 and keeping Dwyer at No. 10.

That makes Gardens our No. 2, behind Jupiter. Both teams handled business last week, though Gardens got a little push-back from Suncoast (3-0 win) and Wellington (9-4 win). District 9-8A is interesting behind Jupiter (4-0), the top seed. Central and Gardens are each 3-2 in the district, while Dwyer and Wellington are 1-4. Each team has three district games remaining.

Benjamin, which hasn’t won a district title since 1994, has the District 12-3A’s top seed wrapped up thanks to Saturday’s 11-7 win over King’s. The Bucs need to beat Jupiter Christian on April 11 (at Roger Dean Stadium) to finish unbeaten in 12-3A. The district title is no guarantee, though, because King’s won’t hand it over. The Lions couldn’t keep Benjamin’s bats quiet, but King’s lineup is legitimate. If those two teams meet in a district final, it’ll be appointment viewing.

Wellington couldn’t shut down Gardens, which threw Joey Boyd and Tony Schutzer at the Wolverines. They combined for eight strikeouts, showing that Wellington is still a little impatient at the plate. But they move up because of Park Vista’s head-scratching loss to Seminole Ridge.

After winning out last week, West Boca and Atlantic stay where they are. West Boca’s start has been particularly surprising — standout catcher Michael Barash graduated high school early to attend LSU, and Wake Forest-committed junior right-hander Sean Gabel hasn’t pitched due to a stress fracture in his arm.

Trinity Christian fans won’t like that their team remains on the bubble despite two wins last week, including that 8-5 win at Dwyer. The Warriors showed off their power in that one, with Palm Beach State-bound catcher Franco Guardascione going yard (he also tripled). Had Dwyer not beat Central (a district opponent and then-No. 2), Trinity would be in the rankings.

We’ll have to see how things shake out over spring break. As you know, rankings [] are completely subjective [] are completely stupid [] don’t matter at all [] aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on [] made up by some jerk. Mark one or all of your favorite choices.

Checking in with the other bubble teams: American Heritage had a 1-0 loss to Palm Beach Central and has lost its last three … Suncoast held Gardens to three runs, but was shut out by the Gators … John I. Leonard fell 2-0 to Boca Raton, which is a feisty 5-9.
