Former Palm Beach Gardens ace J.D. Underwood throws no-hitter

By Matt Porter

Palm Beach State coach Kyle Forbes knows J.D. Underwood is in a groove.

“He’s pitching well down the stretch,” Forbes said.

That’s probably an understatement. Underwood, a sophomore out of Palm Beach Gardens High, threw a no-hitter Tuesday in PBSC’s 1-0 win over Miami-Dade.

Underwood struck out 10. In his last start, he fanned 17 in a win over Broward College.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander, the son of former major leaguer Tom Underwood, has committed to Miami. However, it’s not a stretch to say he’s improving his stock for the June MLB draft.

Update: Underwood was named national pitcher of the week by the National Junior College Association of America, PBSC coach Kyle Forbes said.
