Persson retired as the Warriors’ football coach after the 2011 season, his 30th at Jupiter High. The ceremony will be held during Jupiter’s spring game against West Boca Raton at 7 p.m. May 30.

Jupiter High opened in 1965, but had not named a field or building after anyone until dedicating its baseball field for former coach Doug Ferguson last month. This is another tribute to a longtime coach who left a mark.

“It’s total dedication,” Jupiter Athletic Director Mike Deleonardo said of Persson’s commitment. “You have a guy who didn’t just coach football — he committed himself to Jupiter High School since 1982. He was always willing to help any and all comers.”

Appropriate, since at the time the Post learned of the upcoming celebration, Persson, 60, was picking up hurdles at a track meet. He plans to retire as a teacher in January 2015.

“It’s kind of the whipped cream on the top of the sundae, however you want to say it,” he said of the honor.
