Port St. Lucie grad Larry Sanders making big impact for the Bucks

PORT ST. LUCIE — A sun-bleached road cuts through lines of palm trees, making its way onto the Port St. Lucie High School campus just east of U.S. 1.

The school’s back yard is a 7,000-acre state park. The warm waves of the Atlantic roll a couple of miles away.

This is where Larry Sanders went to school, a serene setting that produced one of the NBA’s most intimidating defenders.

“I grew up a lot there,” Sanders said Monday.

Sanders, a third-year, 6-foot-11 post for the Milwaukee Bucks, is one of the NBA’s breakout stars and potentially a pivotal figure in the first-round playoff series against the Heat, although he struggled in Game 1.
