Class 2A state track preview: Suncoast girls, Glades Central boys aiming for medals

By Matt Porter

This weekend marks the first round of state track meets at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Here’s what to expect from the Class 2A meet, which starts at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Admission to the meet is $9. For more information, see the FHSAA’s website.

Class 2A boys

Could Glades Central, which is predicted to finish 14th according to FLRunners.com’s Class 2A boys virtual meet, earn a team medal? Not inconceivable, but the Raiders will need their sprinters to be on to have a chance.

Glades Central junior Ed’Treon Wilcox will try to drop his personal-best 100 time of 10.65, which has him seeded fourth. He and classmate Bernard Willingham (11th, 10.85) will be chasing Miami Jackson junior Tyrone Thornton (10.43).

Wilcox and Willingham are part of the Raiders’ 400 relay, which is seeded second. They’re about six-tenths behind Miami-Washington.

St. Andrew’s freshman Nic Jacobsen and Suncoast sophomore Sam Geiman are hunting for medals in the 3,200.

The meet will also be a chance to see a special kind of athlete: Plantation-American Heritage senior Walter Tucker. He could sweep both hurdles events, and is also seeded seventh in the discus. He’s about 5-11 and 180 pounds. Speed and power.

Class 2A girls
According to FLRunners.com’s Class 2A girls virtual meet, Suncoast is expected to finish ninth. It’s not a stretch to think the Chargers maybe finish in the top six.

Suncoast should get big points from junior Bianca Joseph, who is seeded third in the 100 hurdles and 12th in the 300 hurdles, and senior Aluntrea Davis, who is fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. Both are part of the Chargers’ 400 relay, which is seeded third. Sophomores Ivana Ford (high jump) and Yanique Brooks (triple) will contend for points.

Dreyfoos junior Jenna Meyers-Sinett is seeded seventh in the pole vault at 10 feet, but she cleared 11 feet at districts. Reaching that Saturday could win her gold.

Glades Central could send freshman Tatiana Bridges (eighth, high jump) and junior Fabrianna Nation (ninth, triple jump) to the medal stand.

Lincoln Park seventh-grader Shinikah Williams (15th) will try to show what she’s made of in the triple.

Plantation-American Heritage, which boasts some of the best boys and girls competitors in the state, is expected to run away with the girls meet – by about 50 points, according to the virtual meet.

The virtual meets predict finishes based on regional times and distances.
