Class 3A state track preview: Lakes leads light list of locals

By Matt Porter

This weekend marks the second and final round of state track meets at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Here’s what to expect from the Class 3A meet, which starts at 1 p.m. Friday.

Admission to the meet is $9. For more information, see the FHSAA’s website.

Class 3A boys

As is common, Palm Beach County has light representation at the 3A meet. Just nine qualifiers – five boys, four girls – from the county qualified for state. Only five county schools are classified as 3A.

That’s not to say we don’t have storylines.

Palm Beach Lakes could have a couple boys jump to the top of the medal stand. In the 300 hurdles, junior Jonathan Hayden (2nd seed) and senior Darius Hodges (3rd) will try to beat Miami-Northwestern senior Artie Burns, the fastest qualifer. In the 110 hurdles, Hayden has a shot at gold, while junior Stephen Louis could pick up points.

In the triple, it’s doubtful anyone will catch Tampa-Hillsborough senior Jeremiah Green – his 51-4 mark is a) quite good and b) four and a half inches ahead of the second-best qualifier – but Hodges and Louis could be in the top four.

Lakes senior Eric Whipple (200) and Boynton junior Luis Nieves (1,600) have outside chances at medals.
