Sam Budnyk scholarship finalists announced

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced today 10 finalists for the Sam Budnyk Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which will be announced Tuesday.

The finalists are:

Matthew Clayton, Jupiter (Volleyball)

Mary Dixon, Wellington (Golf)

Claire Dykas, Spanish River (Lacrosse)

Bethany Gaffey, Olympic Heights (Soccer)

Alison Irwin, Dwyer (Softball, Cross Country, Golf)

Olivia Makepeace, Suncoast (Swimming)

Omar Mazariego, Palm Beach Lakes (Cross Country, Track & Field, Golf, Soccer)

Rebecca Meiser, Jupiter (Swimming)

Matthew Romanelli, American Heritage (Swimming)

Pauline Thiemann, Suncoast (Water Polo, Swimming)

The Sam Budnyk Student-Athlete of the Year Scholarship, first awarded in 2005, is presented annually to a graduating high school senior in a Palm Beach County public or private school who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, community service and athletics. It is good for up to $20,000 over four years. It is named in honor of Budnyk, a former coach and athletic director at Cardinal Newman for nearly 50 years.
