Baseball: Six selected for FACA state all-star games

By Matt Porter

Six area seniors were picked by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association for its state all-star baseball games.

Jupiter first baseman John McCarthy, Palm Beach Central left-hander John Padich and South Fork pitcher/outfielder Jason Popovich will play for the East team in the games, which are held May 24-26 at Firemen’s Field in Sebring.

Palm Beach Central third baseman Ian Hagenmiller will play for the North squad. Dwyer shortstop Huner Hope and Jensen Beach right-hander Taylor Blatch were selected for the South.

Palm Beach Central’s Scott Benedict and Spanish River’s Bill Harvey are members of the East coaching staff.

Each of the four regional teams will play a pair of 10-inning games this weekend, beginning 11 a.m. Saturday (North-South; East-West teams play at 2:30 p.m.). The losing teams play at 11 a.m. Sunday, with the winners to follow 30 minutes afterward. Before the games, a Friday workout will be held. Harvey, who serves as FACA District 17 chairman, said all major league teams will attend the workout, “including the area scouts, Florida scouts and national cross-checkers – usually around 80 to 100 MLB team reps.”

UPDATE (6:04 p.m. Tuesday, May 21): The original information provided to The Post contained only the East team players.
