Hoops: Ex-Summit Christian star Farad Cobb signs with Northwest Florida

By Jeff Greer

Farad Cobb needed a new basketball home.

The ex-Summit Christian guard was dismissed from the University of Chattanooga team in late February for undisclosed reasons, but stayed on campus to finish the semester. He signed with junior college Northwest Florida State and will be eligible to play this fall.

Cobb, the Palm Beach Post Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012, played in 26 games for Chattanooga, starting eight. He averaged 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in those games, including a 21-point outburst against Kansas in November.

He was arrested for underage drinking and disorderly conduct during the spring semester and suspended from the team. Chattanooga coach John Shulman told the media in February that Cobb’s arrest had no impact on his dismissal.

“It got to the point where as a head coach, you have to make tough decisions,” Shulman told reporters in February. “It was nothing illegal that he did. It reached a point where we needed to head in a different direction, and so is he.”

Enter Northwest Florida, which has picked off the two best guards out of Palm Beach County in recent seasons. Grandview Prep star Ivan Canete signed with Northwest Florida this spring. Steven Hurt, a 6-10 forward who played a season at Lipscomb, also signed with Northwest Florida this month.
