2013 MLB Draft: Okeechobee’s Crawford, Boca’s Gonzalez first-rounders

By Matt Porter

Two locals were drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, which began Thursday.

Florida right-hander Jonathon Crawford, a junior out of Okeechobee High, was selected No. 20 overall by the Detroit Tigers. He was the first SEC pitcher chosen and the highest Gators pitcher selected since John Burke went sixth overall to Houston in 1991.

Oral Roberts junior Alex ‘Chi Chi’ Gonzalez was taken 23rd overall by the Texas Rangers. Gonzalez, a right-hander, was the seventh college pitcher off the board.

Slot value — the MLB’s suggested amount of a given pick’s signing bonus — for the 20th overall pick is $2,001,700. For the 23rd, it is $1,920,600.
