Time, date set for Dwyer kickoff classic against Miami Central, the No. 1 team in the nation

By Jeff Greer

The Dwyer-Miami Central series is primed for another episode, and this may be the best one yet.

The highly anticipated preseason exhibition at Dwyer will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 24. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Florida.

Several exciting updates have been tossed into the mix since Fox Sports Florida announced in June it would broadcast the game. Miami Central, loaded with a top-flight, BCS-bound backfield and a hulking offensive line, is the top-ranked team in the country in the RivalsHigh 100 preseason rankings. MaxPreps has the Rockets ranked second in its national rankings, and Friday Night Football’s Florida edition considers Central the best team in the state.

That only adds to the motivation for Dwyer, a team with no shortage of BCS talent. The Panthers enter the 2013 season as the area’s undisputed best team and serious state-title hopes. The rapid improvement of junior quarterback Daniel Parr, plus the rise of running back Alonso Smith, has Dwyer’s offense looking better by the day.

The teams met last fall in a dramatic kickoff classic that featured heavy rain, a scary injury, fantastic defense and a frantic finish. Central won that game 15-7 and beat Dwyer 33-14 in the 2011 kickoff classic.
