Soccer: Fort Lauderdale Strikers to play tribute game in honor of former Boca player

Updated to reflect a change in opponent for the Strikers
South Florida’s only pro soccer team will play an exhibition next Tuesday to honor the life of former Boca soccer star Mateus Oliveira, who died in a car accident in May.

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers, members of the NASL, will take on Florida Memorial University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Boca High. The game’s proceeds will be put toward helping Oliveira’s family in Brazil, his native country.

Oliveira, once a standout midfielder for Boca, a state powerhouse, was driving north around 5:30 a.m. on May 26 when the front of his car bumped into a truck pulling a trailer. He was ejected from his car and killed at the scene.

The accident shocked the Boca soccer community. Oliveira, who lived with his 22-year-old brother Andres, worked at the Cheesecake Factory. He was 20 years old.

Admission is donation-only.
