Georgia high school football player dies during “routine tackle”

By Jeff Greer

Horrible news out of Georgia over the weekend: A high school cornerback broke his neck during a team scrimmage and died on Friday night.

Deantre Turman, a junior at Creekside High in suburban Atlanta, went limp as he made a tackle and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Doctors said Turman fractured his third vertebrae.

The news shocked Fulton County, which is just southwest of Atlanta. Turman (5-11, 165) had verbally committed to play at Kentucky in 2015. His death is believed to be the second football-related death in Georgia in the past few years. Witnesses said Turman was making a routine tackle, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report.
