Sources: Referee dies after collapsing at kickoff classic game

By Jeff Greer

A referee collapsed and died on Friday after a suspected heart attack at a preseason football game in Boca Raton, multiple sources say.

Head referee Jerry Lohmann, a 73-year-old resident of Belle Glade, fell during a timeout toward the end of the second quarter of the Olympic Heights-Wellington kickoff classic. A group of trainers and assistant coaches, led by former firefighter and Wellington assistant coach Al LeMay, revived Lohmann at the scene. He was taken by ambulance to West Boca Medical Center, where sources say he passed.

The spokesman for West Boca Medical Center has not returned multiple messages for confirmation.

The game between Olympic Heights and visiting Wellington, which was in the second quarter, was discontinued.
