Park Vista ATH Renard Cheren commits to Northern Illinois

By Jeff Greer

He dropped FIU a few weeks ago once Northern Illinois started heavily recruiting him, so it only made sense for Park Vista senior Renard Cheren to make a quick decision.

Cheren (6-foot-1, 195 pounds, No. 23 on the Big Board) verbally committed to NIU on Tuesday night. Middle Tennessee State was the main challenger for Cheren’s commitment, though he also had offers from FAU, FIU, Appalachian State and Tennessee State.

“COMMITTED to Northern Illinois! I am 100% sure with my decision!” Cheren posted on Facebook.

NIU played in the Orange Bowl last season, losing 31-10 to Florida State. The Huskies are the highest-ranked non-BCS team in the Associated Press Top 25, receiving 27 points in the latest poll, good for a No. 30 ranking.

Cheren, who plays defensive back and linebacker for Park Vista, runs a 4.7 40-yard dash and is one of the top 320 prospects in Florida, according to 247 Sports.
