Although it’s early in the season, volleyball fans will have a better indication of the area’s best teams following the East Coast Challenge tournament this weekend.
The tournament will begin Friday and the champion will be crowned on Saturday. The East Coast Challenge features 16 squads, and it will be played at Martin County High School and Jensen Beach High School. The list of schools that will participate in the tournament includes six teams in the Post’s preseason Top 10 — Martin County, Wellington, Jensen Beach, Dwyer, Jupiter and Park Vista.
The defending tournament champion, Boca Raton, is not part of the field this year. The Bobcats are ranked seventh in the MaxPreps national high school volleyball rankings.
“It’s always a great tournament,” Martin County volleyball coach Krissy Schmidt said. “Typically, in years past, everybody that has won the tournament, they advance at least to the final four of the state tournament.”
