Wellington couldn’t have asked for a better to start to its season.
Not only are the Wolverines a perfect 8-0, but they also earned the East Coast Challenge tournament title on Saturday. The 16-team tournament featured six squads in the Post’s preseason Top 10 — Martin County, Wellington, Jensen Beach, Dwyer, Jupiter and Park Vista.
“It means a lot,” Wolverines coach Brian Bausch said. “That tournament has produced a lot of state champions in the past. Even teams that haven’t necessarily won the tournament, they still end up winning state titles. It’s a very prestigious tournament. All of those teams are good.”
Wellington beat Martin County in two sets 25-23, 25-20 in the finals to earn its first East Coast Challenge championship in school history.
Middle blocker Sirena Vorster and setter Chelsea Borotti led the way for the Wolverines. Vorster accounted for 46 kills and just two hitting errors in five matches during the tournament. Meanwhile, Borotti added 113 assists in the five matches. Both players made the All-Tournament Team.
“Our middle hitter really came and showed that she can expand her game and make herself more available to a setter,” Bausch said. “I was impressed by Sirena.”
Here is the full All-Tournament Team:
Chelsea Borotti – Wellington
Sirena Vorster- Wellington
Jenna Daniel- Martin County
Brylee Frank- Martin County
Ali Jacobs- Cardinal Gibbons
Kendal Bradley- Jensen Beach
Allie Weeks- Jupiter
