Week 3 Look Ahead: Inside the Top 10, plus the best games on this week’s schedule

By Jeff Greer

Some surprise results followed up last week’s unexpected finishes. The first two weeks are out of the way — some schools start district play this week.

Only one of last week’s top five teams lost (see last week’s Top 10 here), though it’s hard to punish American Heritage for losing to Plantation-American Heritage, one of the state’s top teams. Dwyer and Seminole Ridge rolled, while Royal Palm Beach scraped by a scrappy Pahokee squad. Fort Pierce Central was idle.

Don’t look now but the Clewiston Tigers are on their way back to prominence after just two games under new coach Pete Walker. Clewiston beat state power Immokalee and is a win or two away from warranting statewide ranking. The Tigers will be favorites against King’s Academy in two weeks.

Here’s the new Post Top 10 entering Week 2:

1. Dwyer 2-0
2. American Heritage 1-1
3. Fort Pierce Central 1-0
4. Royal Palm Beach 2-0
5. Seminole Ridge 2-0
6. Park Vista 1-1
7. Palm Beach Gardens 1-1
8. Clewiston 2-0
9. Boynton Beach 2-0
10. Glades Central 1-1
Also considered: Pahokee, Cardinal Newman, Palm Beach Central, King’s Academy.

I’m taking a wait-and-see approach with Fort Pierce Central. The folks at the TCPalm rank Vero Beach ahead of Central, so I won’t have them leapfrog American Heritage after a bye week. I still believe Heritage is the second-best team in the area.

Park Vista and Gardens swapped spots ahead of their anticipated Week 3 games. Vista plays Seminole Ridge; Gardens plays Dwyer.

I told you Clewiston would join the rankings and, sure enough, there the Tigers are. That’s a nice starting spot for a team that earned it. Boynton Beach stays put after a solid win over Lake Worth. And Glades Central rejoins the rankings after its ugly win over Palm Beach Central.

Newman, which is 0-1, dropped out of the rankings after an idle week. The Crusaders have a tough road game at IMG Academy this week. Pahokee stays in the also-considered group after a strong showing at Royal Palm Beach — the Blue Devils had a chance to tie it at the end of regulation. I just can’t quit Palm Beach Central yet. And King’s deserves a mention.

Top Games This Week
We could really use a high school football Red Zone, couldn’t we? Look at all these top-notch games:

Benjamin at Pope John Paul II, Thursday: This is a fantastic matchup in the Southeastern Football Conference. Benjamin will be looking to bounce back after a rough loss to John Carroll.

Pahokee at John I. Leonard, Thursday: Leonard desperately needs some good news after a slow start to the 2013 season. Pahokee will be the favorite here.

Seminole Ridge at Park Vista, Thursday: Ridge has this game before a bye week and outscored its first two opponents 75-21. Vista must play better than it did in a sloppy 28-19 win over Gardens on Friday night.

Glades Central at American Heritage, Thursday: It doesn’t quite have the same allure that it did in 2011, but this is still a fun game. Central’s defense made some noise in a 13-7 win over Palm Beach Central. Heritage will be hungry after a road loss.

Dwyer at Palm Beach Gardens: The cross-town rivalry may be the game of the week. Dwyer’s the heavy favorite, but these two haven’t played each other for a few years, and there’s not shortage of animosity between them.

Kissimmee Osceola at Fort Pierce Central: Osceola is one of the top teams in the state, and FPC coach Josh Shaffer wanted to test his team with this early-season tilt.
