Suspensions, fines doled out for John I. Leonard-Pahokee fights

By Jeff Greer

It took a little longer than expected, but the Florida High School Athletic Association on Friday announced its disciplinary action following two fights between John I. Leonard High and Pahokee football players during their Sept. 13 game.

Three Leonard players and one Pahokee player received suspensions and both schools were “reprimanded” by the FHSAA for their players’ involvement in a pair of clashes that broke out in the fourth quarter of Pahokee’s 27-6 win against Leonard. The FHSAA also fined Leonard $200 — $100 for each player who left the bench during an on-field altercation.

Pahokee’s suspended player, receiver Jason Johnson, will miss six weeks. He was the team’s leading receiver. Unless his suspension is reduced through appeal, Johnson won’t return to the Pahokee sidelines until his team’s Oct. 25 game against Seminole Ridge, meaning he’ll miss two his team’s three district games. His suspension ends a day ahead of the Ridge contest.

The two Leonard players who left the bench during the altercations had to sit out one week. The third player, suspended for six weeks, will return the same day as Pahokee’s Johnson. Leonard hosts Santaluces for a district game on Oct. 25.
