By Jeff Greer
Here goes the next version of Ask Me Anything. Here, I answer questions on high school football, recruiting and any other topic you guys chose.
I got a lot of questions about Dwyer and Royal Palm Beach. They play Thursday night in a major District 13-7A matchup. I also handle a few questions about the state tournament picture. And a hash brown question.
We’re starting off the sixth edition of Ask Me Anything with a big-picture playoff question”
HaitianSensation: Do you think Dwyer has a chance of knocking of St. Thomas this year? If so, is it possible we could be seeing another state appearance? Also, how does Dwyer seem to fair up next year? They only have 12 returning players coming back next year and only four or five are current starters.
Jeff Greer: Of course Dwyer can beat STA. Dwyer starts three BCS receivers and has a Division I quarterback. The defense is underrated because of the offensive firepower. Now, has Dwyer played much a schedule so far? Two games — Glades Central and Palm Beach Gardens — were supposed to challenges, and Dwyer shut them both out. That said, Dwyer’s only test this regular season is Royal Palm Beach on Thursday. The Panthers can get their tune-ups in the first two rounds of the playoffs. But no team will be as tough as STA. That’d be my main concern.
Once anyone hits the regional finals in the 7A playoffs, it’s really tough. Beating St. Thomas Aquinas wouldn’t guarantee anything. Not this year.
Winston: What about Santaluces?
JG: Santaluces has the same problem as Boynton Beach, whose fans are all over me about not ranking them higher after starting 5-0. They have three wins against nobody. No. One. They put up a very good fight against Park Vista, but the Cobras worry me on offense and won’t get past the regional finals. No 8A Palm Beach team will. So is Santaluces one of the top 10 teams in the county? Probably not. Top 16 or 17? Absolutely. Nobody likes playing the Chiefs, they always make it tough. But let’s take a wait-and-see approach on them.
Joe: Does Royal Palm Beach have a chance against Dwyer?
JG: Of course. That’s why they play the games. But a win against Dwyer requires a lot of things to go wrong for Dwyer and a lot to go right for RPB. Daniel Parr has to have a bad game for Dwyer and turn the ball over. The Dwyer defense has to struggle against RPB’s receivers. I just don’t see both of those things happening this week. Dwyer’s offense can struggle to get to 20 points and against any Palm Beach County team it won’t matter. The defense is that good. Thursday will be sloppy and ugly, but Dwyer should win comfortably.
rpb: How do you think the rest of Royal Palm’s season will go? What do you think about the West Boca game?
JG: I’m expecting them to lose to Dwyer, like every other team on the Panthers’ regular-season schedule. I still see them in the playoffs, despite the West Boca loss. Someone else will beat West Boca (in addition to Dwyer) to give them two losses. Royal Palm’s best hope now is either West Boca crumbling and losing three district games or RPB making a tiebreaker. I don’t see Royal Palm losing another district game after Dwyer. That offense does scare me sometimes, though.
John Doe: Do you think Gardens isn’t overrated after going 2-2?
JG: That’s rather confusing. I don’t think Gardens is overrated, if that’s what you’re asking. The Gators have lost to two good teams. I worry about their offense, but the 8A teams this fall are pretty even. Gardens should be right in it up to the regional semifinals or quarterfinals.
Jay: Palm Beach Central has the biggest line and a bunch of skill. What can be the problem out west this year?
JG: A lot of people are wondering the same thing. The team that beat Seminole Ridge 37-13 is the one I expected to see this fall. The one that lost to Boca and then scored three against Royal Palm and seven at Glades Central is the Jekyll to the Ridge/West Boca wins’ Dr. Hyde. This week’s game against Santaluces is the classic trap game for Central, but I’m thinking last week’s win over Ridge will reboot that team. They were struggling to get impact blocks at the point of attack. They are literally a combined six or seven yards away from being 5-0.
Riviera Beach: I agree about Booker T. Washington but don’t be surprised if Glades Central upset University. Also, why is Dwyer playing at RPB two years in a row? The game was at RPB last season and is scheduled to be at RPB again. Two years ago it was at Dwyer. I thought it would be back at Dwyer this season.
JG: They redid the districts in the offseason, so even though both teams were in the same district in 2011-12, they are basically starting fresh in 2013. That’s why the Panthers are at Royal Palm two seasons in a row. And no, I won’t be surprised if Glades Central beats University.
@wilverdornell: Favorite place to eat in Pittsburgh?
JG: For those who don’t know, I grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island before going to college in Pittsburgh. I came to love eating breakfast at Pamela’s. I love a good late-night meal at Primanti’s or Fuel and Fuddle. As for the rest of the day: Anywhere with good pierogies.
Learning mother: Jeff, how do the unskilled positions get exposure for college? Line, etc.
JG: The best strategy is talking to your high school’s coach. There are online recruiting services, too, but start with your kid’s own coach.
@sjtimmermann: Why is a touchdown worth six points?
JG: Football used to reward kicking more than crossing the goal line. Field goals were five points. But eventually football rulemakers realized scoring a touchdown is harder than kicking a field goal and made touchdowns worth one more point than field goals in 1912. But the field goal dropped in value twice after that, from five to four and then four to three. (Yes, I looked it up.)
@arloguth: How do you order your hash browns at @WaffleHouse?
JG: Shocker — I’ve never eaten at a Waffle House. I’ve had Denny’s, Shoney’s, Friendly’s and just about every other chain breakfast. I’d promise to go next time I’m on the road, but I exclusively eat at Cracker Barrel when I travel.
