Every week, we learn a lot about teams. But Week 6 may have been the most telling yet, as it was filled with big matchups.
It’s evident, as the Top 10 includes several new teams. Four teams in last week’s Top 10 lost, making room for those new schools. The most surprising result may have been Cardinal Newman’s blowout of King’s Academy. The Crusaders rolled over the Lions in a rout. Dwyer, Fort Pierce Central, Pahokee and Palm Beach Gardens made statements with big wins over tough opponents. And Park Vista, Glades Central, Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Central took care of business.
Here’s the new Post Top 10 entering Week 7:
1. Dwyer 6-0
2. Fort Pierce Central 5-0
3. Park Vista 4-1
4. Pahokee 4-1
5. American Heritage 3-3
6. Glades Central 3-2
7. Boynton Beach 6-0
8. Palm Beach Gardens 3-2
9. Royal Palm Beach 3-2
10. Palm Beach Central 3-3
Also considered: Glades Day 5-0, Clewiston 4-1, Seminole Ridge 2-3, Cardinal Newman 3-2, West Boca Raton 4-2, King’s Academy 4-1.
Fitting just 10 teams in this week’s rankings was tough. There are some schools that did not make the cut that have resumes good enough to be included. West Boca, Glades Day and Cardinal Newman definitely fall in that category. Keeping the top three the same was an easy decision, as they all won their games. Dwyer continued to show that they are the class of Palm Beach County with a convincing win over Royal Palm Beach.
Pahokee jumped to No. 4 after a hard-fought victory against American Heritage, which dropped to No. 5. The Stallions have played a difficult schedule, losing to Plantation-American Heritage, Cocoa and Pahokee this season, so I couldn’t penalize them too much in the rankings. Even though Glades Central won last week, the Raiders fell one spot after the Blue Devils took the their spot in the Top 5.
Boynton Beach continued its undefeated season, moving up to No. 7. The Tigers will be tested this week in a district game against Fort Lauderdale-Dillard. Palm Beach Gardens and Palm Beach Central climbed their way back into the Top 10. Both of these schools have played well over the past couple of weeks. The Gators have won two in a row to set up a fun matchup against Glades Central on Friday. And the Broncos have turned their season around with wins over Seminole Ridge and Santaluces the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Royal Palm Beach fell to No. 9 due to a lopsided loss to Dwyer. But what team wouldn’t lose to the Panthers these days?
Top Games This Week
As we begin the second half of the season, the games begin to carry a little more meaning. Take a look at this week’s most intriguing matchups:
Boynton Beach at Fort Lauderdale-Dillard
The Tigers’ dominant play has been one of the most surprising storylines of the season. But even at 6-0, many continue to wonder if Boynton Beach is just a product of a soft schedule. We should have a better answer to that following the Tigers’ district game against Dillard on Friday. For the first time since Boynton Beach’s season opener against Cardinal Newman, it will be tested this week. Quarterback Lamar Jackson has led the way for the Tigers this year, throwing for seven touchdowns and running for seven more. He will have to add to those numbers if Boynton Beach is going to move to 7-0. A win against Dillard would go a long way in helping the Tigers secure a spot in the playoffs.
Glades Central at Palm Beach Gardens
The Raiders’ tough non-district schedule continues this week against Palm Beach Gardens. Both teams enter Friday’s matchup riding two-game winning streaks. After scoring just 29 points over the first three weeks of the season, Glades Central’s offense has erupted for 66 points over the past two weeks. The Gators have followed a similar path, as their offense turned in its best performance of the season last week against Seminole Ridge, putting up 40 points. This should be a fun game between two teams just starting to hit their strides.
Boca Raton at Pahokee, Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Blue Devils don’t have much time to celebrate last week’s huge win against American Heritage. Pahokee will face a feisty Boca Raton team Friday. The Bobcats have already upset Palm Beach Central this season and came one point away from shocking Palm Beach Gardens. Boca Raton is talented enough to upset Pahokee if the Blue Devils aren’t at their best.
