Boynton Beach girls basketball star Shakoa Edwards orally commits to Southern Miss

Shakoa Edwards has made a decision.

The Boynton Beach guard orally committed to Southern Mississippi and plans to officially sign her letter of intent in a ceremony held at the school on Nov. 13. Edwards chose the Golden Eagles over a number of other schools, including USF and Delaware.

The decision became clear for Edwards after she took an official visit to Southern Miss in August. The Golden Eagles finished with a 15-16 record last season as part of Conference USA.

“It’s a small campus and she just won’t be considered a number,” said her mother, Charlene Edwards. “I believe it was more of the team and the coaching staff that won her over. They were the same people over the phone and in person.”

Edwards, a Palm Beach Post All-Area selection last season, led the Tigers to a 21-6 record and a District 15-5A championship as a junior.
