Girls Hoops: Inside the new Top 10, plus this week’s best games

By Anthony Chiang

We are through the first week of the season and we already have a few changes in the Post’s Top 10.

The top three did not change, but Boynton Beach dropped a few spots. We have one new school that has entered the mix and Palm Beach Gardens fell out of the Top 10 after an 0-2 start. Oxbridge Academy has been very impressive to start the year, overcoming the loss of star guard Crystal Primm. The junior won’t return until January because of a knee injury.

Here’s the new Post Top 10 entering Week 2 of the season:

1. Grandview Prep (1-0): Earned a two-point win over Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas to start the season.
2. Dwyer (2-0): Star Keyanna Harris is averaging 23.5 points per game for the Panthers.
3. Lake Worth (2-0): Started the season with two impressive wins.
4. Palm Beach Lakes (1-0): Beat Boynton Beach by 29 points to start the year.
5. Boca Raton (1-1): Fell to No. 2 Dwyer by just two points.
6. Oxbridge Academy (2-0): Outscored first two opponents be a combined score of 108-50.
7. Park Vista (3-0): Averaging 53.7 points per game.
8. Boynton Beach (1-2): Slow start to the year, which began with high expectations.
9. Suncoast (2-0): Duo of Capri Winn and Jaylin Hawkins playing well for the Chargers.
10. Cardinal Newman (3-0): The Crusaders are off to an impressive start.

Games of the Week:

No. 7 Park Vista (3-0) at No. 9 Suncoast (2-0), Monday at 7:30 p.m.:
The Chargers really have a chance to prove something in this game. So far, Suncoast has already beaten Palm Beach Gardens and Olympic Heights, but a win over the Cobras would catch everybody’s attention. Meanwhile, Park Vista is off to a strong start with the fantastic trio of Jasmine Martin, Emily Lochten and Kiara Meeks.

No. 4 Palm Beach Lakes (1-0) at No. 10 Cardinal Newman (3-0), Wednesday at 7 p.m.: The Rams have more to lose in this game. Like Suncoast, the Crusaders have an opportunity to make a statement with a victory against Palm Beach Lakes. So far, Cardinal Newman has taken care of business, but the Rams are better than any team the Crusaders have faced so far.

No. 3 Lake Worth (2-0) at No. 8 Boynton Beach (1-2), Thursday at 7:30 p.m.: The Tigers and star senior Shakoa Edwards have started the season by losing two of their first three games. But the disappointing start can be erased with a victory over the Trojans. Lake Worth features junior Jonika Garvin, who is averaging 19 points per game this year. The matchup between Edwards and Garvin will be fun to watch.
