Football: PB Central’s Kc McDermott wins “Chip off the Old Block” award

By Anthony Chiang

Before Palm Beach Central offensive tackle Kc McDermott enrolls at Miami in January, he had an award to win Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound senior, who is rated as the No. 1 prospect on the PBGametime recruiting Big Board, won Florida’s “Chip off the Old Block” award during the Rotary Lobardi Award Presentation in Houston. It is given annually to the top offensive or defensive lineman who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi.

The award is named after the Seven Blocks of Granite offensive line at Fordham University of which Lombardi was a member during the 1936 season. These high school finalists are dubbed “Chips Off the Old Block” as they are projected to be future Lombardi Award candidates.

McDermott, who is the brother of UM junior center Shane McDermott, played a big role in the potent rushing attack that led Palm Beach Central to its second consecutive district title this season.
