Recruiting: Dwyer WR Ezra Saffold, RB Alonzo Smith make decisions

By Anthony Chiang

Ezra Saffold and Alonzo Smith are not going to wait until signing day.

Saffold verbally committed to Northern Illinois on Monday after visiting the campus over the weekend, and Smith verbally committed to FAU on Monday night.

Saffold, a 5-foot-7 wide receiver will become the second Dwyer Panther on Northern Illinois’  roster, joining another 5-foot-7 wide receiver in Tommylee Lewis. Saffold is also the second player from Palm Beach County in the Huskies’ 2014 class, as Park Vista defensive back Renard Cheren is also verbally committed to Northern Illinois.

As a senior, Saffold played a key part in the Panthers’ state title run. The speedster recorded eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the state championship.

As for Smith, his decision did not come as a surprise. According to Panthers coach Jack Daniels, the Dwyer running back “loved” his visit to FAU over the weekend. Still, Smith is planning to take an official visit to Miami (Ohio) over the weekend.

Smith turned in a breakout senior season, finishing as one of the county’s leading rushers as a first-year starter.
