Strong showing for local weightlifters at girls state tournament

A handful of area weightlifters placed among the top 6 Saturday at the 2014 FHSAA Girls Weightlifting Finals at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The event was hosted by Osceola C0unty Schools and drew more than 100 teams from around the state.

Seminole Ridge had the highest-placing team finish among area schools, finishing tied for 7th with 6 points. Wellington tied for 8th place with 5 points, and Jupiter tied for 10th with 3 points.

Spruce Creek won the overall team championship with 28 points, followed by Navarre with 17 points.

Four individual competitors from the area placed among the top 6, with Cheyenne Schenk of Seminole Ridge and Brianna Minnis of Wellington leading the way with a pair of second-place finishes.

Schenk earned 5 points in the 139-pound weight class, finishing just behind first-place finisher Bejai Fray of Lake Weir.

Minnis earned 5 points in the Unlimited weight class, placing second behind Sabrina Palmares of Clay.

Schenk’s teammate Eileen Perez was 6th in the 110-pound weight class, and Christine Simonson of Jupiter finished fourth in the 183-pound weight class.
