The state of Florida is well represented in MaxPreps’ list of the country’s top 100 baseball players in the Class of 2014.
Florida has the most players on the list, as 25 come from the Sunshine State. California is second with 19 players and Georgia is third with six players. If we narrow it down to our area, two players from Palm Beach County and another from Martin County are among the 25 from Florida.
Palm Beach Gardens catcher J.J. Schwartz is the highest rated local player on the list, coming in at No. 43. Schwartz is committed to the University of Florida and made the 18U USA baseball team this past summer, and he has already hit two home runs in eight games this season.
Next on the list from Palm Beach County is Benjamin pitcher Bennett Sousa, who is committed to Virginia. The 6-foot-3 left-hander is rated as the country’s 86th best senior and has allowed one earned run in 17 1/3 innings pitched this season.
Martin County first baseman Jeremy Vasquez is the only player from the Treasure Coast on the list, as he is listed as the 92nd best player in the Class of 2014. Vasquez is also committed to the University of Florida.
The list was compiled using a formula that includes recruiting ratings, mock drafts, selection to Team USA, the Perfect Game Classic, the Under Armour All-American Game, the Area Codes Games and several preseason All-American teams. Check out the full list here.
