Boys basketball: Scott Williams hired to coach Pope John Paul

By Jodie Wagner

Pope John Paul II has named Scott Williams as its new boys basketball coach after a brief search.

A former coach at North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek and the school’s athletic director, Williams will take over an Eagles squad that started the 2013-14 season with one coach and finished with another.

John Franklin began the year as Pope’s coach but left midway through the season. Kevin Johnston served as interim head coach for the remainder of the year.

Pope John Paul finished the season 9-13 and lost in the first round of the district tournament.

The school began a coaching search immediately after the season ended and received 26 applications for the position.

Williams stood out among the group, Athletic Director Matt Dillon said.

“We were looking for the best possible candidate, and Scott clearly rose to the top,” Dillon said. “He’s an outstanding candidate. He’s done great things at North Broward Prep with the basketball program, and we’re looking for a similar outcome here. We’re excited to have him.”

Williams is a Florida Atlantic University graduate who lives in Boca Raton. He has coached the Eagles for the past 11 seasons. The team went 19-9 last year and advanced to the regional semifinals.

He looks forward to the opportunity to coach at Pope John Paul.

“I was looking for a new challenge,” he said. “Pope John Paul is great academically and is very supportive of its athletics and fine arts program. It’s a good fit for me.”
