Water polo: Suncoast boys, St. Andrew’s girls advance to state championships

The Suncoast boys and St. Andrew’s girls water polo teams will compete in the FHSAA state quarterfinals today at Ransom Everglades High School in Miami.

The Chargers defeated Pembroke Pines Charter 14-11 in a first-round match on Tuesday to earn a berth in the quarterfinals against Miami-Gulliver Prep, which beat Miami-MAST 22-7.

The match will be played at 11 a.m. The winner plays Lake Mary or Orlando-Dr. Phillips in the semifinals.

On the girls side, St. Andrew’s will play host Ransom Everglades today at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals. The winner advances to play Winter Park or Fort Lauderdale-Westminster Academy.

The Scots beat Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas 20-8 in the first round, while Ransom Everglades defeated Miami-Dr. Krop 18-3.
