Softball: Inside the regional finals

By Jodie Wagner

Six area teams remain in regional softball playoff competition following Tuesday’s semifinal round.

Park Vista second baseman Savannah Julylia and the Cobras will face Weston-Cypress Bay tonight for the Class 8A regional softball championship.

Park Vista, Dwyer, American Heritage, Lincoln Park Academy, Trinity Christian and Grandview Prep won their games Tuesday and advanced to tonight’s regional finals.

The winners will move on to the FHSAA Finals, which will be held May 7-10 at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach.

Park Vista won its quarterfinal in a rout, defeating rival Wellington 17-7 in six innings. The Cobras pounded out 17 hits in the game, including four by left fielder Allison Hughes. Shortstop Emily Lochten was 3-for-5 with two doubles.

The Cobras host Weston-Cypress Bay on Friday at 7 for the regional championship. Park Vista will be seeking its first-ever trip to the state tournament.

Dwyer (21-8) had a tougher time with Coconut Creek-Monarch, winning 6-5 Tuesday after nearly blowing a three-run lead in the seventh. Pitcher Caitlyn Roberson had a solid performance for Dwyer, giving up six hits and striking out seven.

The Panthers will host nationally ranked Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas tonight. The Raiders are the defending Class 7A state champions and will be a huge test for Dwyer.

American Heritage travels to Miami-Gulliver Prep for a key Class 4A contest. The Stallions beat North Broward Prep 1-0 Tuesday on a sixth-inning triple by Addison Simpson.

This should be a close game between Heritage and Gulliver. The Stallions are three-time defending state champions, while the Raiders are ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

In other regional championship contests, Lincoln Park Academy hosts Mulberry, Trinity Christian hosts Miami-Westminster Christian and Grandview Prep plays at Homestead-Colonial Christian.

Grandview Prep and Trinity Christian won their regional semifinal contests in routs, while Lincoln Park Academy needed eight innings to get by Fort Myers-Bishop Verot.
