Football: Five Pope John Paul seniors commit to colleges

By Jodie Wagner

Five Pope John Paul II High School football players committed to colleges Wednesday during Senior Day activities at the school.

Three players signed national letters of intent: Running back/linebacker DeQuan McGriff with Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy; wide receiver/defensive back Javonta Swinton with Stetson; and linebacker Alex Dolce with Defiance (Ohio) College.

Running back/defensive back Will Jeanlys committed to Southern Methodist and will sign a letter of intent in December, Eagles coach Matt Dillon said.

Jeanlys will enroll at the school in January in order in to complete knee rehabilitation at home, Dillon added.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Jeanlys missed his senior season after tearing his ACL prior to the season opener, but was one of the area’s top players as a junior. He scored touchdowns six different ways; rushing, receiving, interception return, fumble return, kickoff return and punt return.

Also Wednesday, defensive lineman Kieran Leen reiterated his commitment to attend FAU as a preferred walk-on. Leen signed a preferred walk-on letter in February, Dillon said.

“We are thrilled to sign 12 players in just two years, and we credit that to the hard work by everyone, especially the players,” Dillon said. “We credit that partly to being part of the Southeast Football Conference. That allowed our kids to shine and stand out on the football field.”
