Girls lacrosse: Benjamin’s Maria Dattolo, Riley Johnston commit to colleges

By Jodie Wagner

Benjamin teammates Maria Dattolo and Riley Johnston have committed to playing lacrosse at Tufts University and Northwestern University, respectively.

Dattolo, a senior attack and Bucs captain, scored 15 goals and added 11 assists for the Bucs last season. Benjamin advanced to the third round of the state playoffs.

“I chose Tufts University because it is a perfect fit for me,” said Dattolo, who also got offers from Jacksonville University, Davidson College and the United States Naval Academy.

“I knew I wanted to play lacrosse in college and was looking at D1 schools all of my sophomore and junior years. Tufts provides me with the perfect balance of strong academics and a competitive lacrosse environment.”

Dattolo hopes to study medicine or biomedical engineering.

Johnston, a junior midfielder, scored 24 goals and added seven assists and 18 draw controls for Benjamin in 2014.

She chose Northwestern for its academics as well as the opportunity to play for coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, who has led the Wildcats to seven NCAA Women’s Lacrosse championships.

“The school has everything I was looking for in a college,” Johnston said. “I am so excited about my commitment to Northwestern University and am looking forward to being able to continue to play the sport I love and to represent such a tremendous school.”
