Sam Howell is returning to a familiar place.
On Tuesday, Howell was named Cardinal Newman’s new head baseball coach. The 60-year-old graduated from Newman in 1971.
Howell will replace Sean Comfort, who left after two seasons to become the head baseball coach at Melbourne-Palm Bay.
“I never thought I would have the chance to return to Cardinal Newman,” Howell said. “I played there and I started my coaching career there as an assistant for Jack Kokinda. In the back of my mind, I always thought it would be pretty neat to end my career there.”

The last time John I. Leonard’s baseball team won a district title, Doug Magaw was its head coach.
The year was 2006.
Leonard is hoping Magaw can have similar success the second time around, as the Lancers announced Monday they will bring him back to lead their baseball program. Magaw will replace Roger Vasquez, who spent four seasons as Leonard’s head baseball coach.
“Doug is an excellent teacher of the game of baseball,” Lancers athletic director Scott Siegel said. “Getting somebody of his reputation and credibility, it’s just a big plus to have him come back to John I. Leonard.”

Trea Turner didn’t wait long to make his decision.
After the Park Vista product was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 13th overall pick of the 2014 MLB Draft on June 5, Turner signed with San Diego for $2.9 million on Friday, according to multiple reports. Turner signed above his assigned pick value, which was listed at $2,723,300. [More]
