Prior to Friday night’s game against Cardinal Newman, Pahokee will hold a pre-game ceremony in remembrance of Norman “Pooh” Griffith. Sunday will mark the one-year anniversary of Griffith’s death.

No. 1 Pahokee looked awful in the first half, but got a big game from Chris Dunkley and a solid defensive performance to beat Atlantic 13-6 in the opener at Anquan Boldin Stadium. Here are five points worth pondering about that game:

Neither Atlantic nor Pahokee was able to schedule a spring game, so it has been months since their players hit anyone else on another team. Couple that with the fact that Pahokee is opening a brand-new stadium and it will produce a raucous atmosphere for Friday’s game.
That won’t be a problem for either side.

I was out in Pahokee earlier this month and went across the street from the school to survey the new stadium. It looks pretty nice so far, though it still doesn’t appear to have the seating capacity it will need for big games against Atlantic, Dwyer and Glades Central (the Raiders’ first visit will be the 2010 Muck Bowl).

Despite his football team’s recent dismissal from a 7-on-7 tournament, Pahokee athletic director Tom Mejia believes he has a relatively well-behaved team.
The Blue Devils were sent home one day into Nike’s 7on tournament in Beaverton, Ore. for allegedly stealing football gloves off of a display at the facility. Mejia said the school is investigating the situation internally and believes the theft involved only one player. If that is the case, smearing the reputation of the rest of the players and coaches on the team is unfair, Mejia said.

Pahokee senior Raheam Buxton’s career with the Blue Devils has been marked by injury, ineligibility, immaturity, a major position change and a lot of time on the bench.
And now, before he has put together even one solid season, Buxton has a scholarship offer to the University of Miami. Buxton was on the brink of announcing his intent to play for the Hurricanes last week, but canceled those plans in order to visit the campus again. Blue Devils coach Blaze Thompson said today Buxton committed to Miami over the weekend.
