Matt Elam veers back to Florida Gators

  • 3:32 pm Saturday, January 9th, 2010 by Jason Lieser

Keep in mind, this is not official.

He could change his mind again tomorrow or the next day, but Dwyer senior Matt Elam made his third (and possibly final) college commitment during today’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Elam said he will play for the Florida Gators next season. He originally committed to Florida in October 2008, then switched to Florida State last week. During NBC’s broadcast this afternoon, he said he will be a Gator after all.

Last month, Elam won his second straight Lou Groza Player of the Year award and was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state.

He rushed for 1,883 yards and 27 touchdowns and posted 61 tackles at linebacker last season while leading Dwyer to its first state championship.

Here’s more from The Post’s Ben Volin:

Not even NBC field reporter Lewis Johnson fully believed Matt Elam when Elam picked up a Gators hat Saturday afternoon, announcing his intent to play college football at the University of Florida.

“Are you sure?” Johnson asked Elam during the broadcast of the U.S. Army All-America Bowl.

“I’m positive,” Elam replied.
