Former Royal Palm Beach teacher, coach jailed on charges of luring child

At the end of August former Royal Palm Beach High School teacher John R. Springer told a 17-year-old student and volleyball team player who he coached that he had something to tell her but he couldn’t write or text it.

Spanish River girls’ volleyball return to familiar position in regionals

Spanish River girls’ volleyball coach Karen Adams wants to make one thing clear: The Sharks’ 14-13 record isn’t exactly a fair representation of her team.

“We didn’t have four or five of our key players at (early-season tournaments),” Adams said. “I mean, eight of those losses came at those tournaments.”

Now that Spanish River has returned to full health and power, Adams said her team is where it should be: in the regional quarterfinals. The Sharks host Davie-Nova on Wednesday in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals at 6 p.m.


FHSAA reclassification takes next step toward ‘Rural Division’

The FHSAA Board of Directors voted last week to continue evaluating the reclassification process in six high school sports for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. More than 40 schools have expressed interest in reclassifying as a “rural school” and playing in the new class, which the FHSAA calls the Rural Division.

The FHSAA Board of Directors will vote on the new classification policy in November.


Martin County volleyball star Nicole Walch commits to Nebraska

The hits just keep on coming for Martin County volleyball standout Nicole Walch. Along with her sister, Elise, our Big Schools Player of the Year last season, Walch led Martin County to a Class 5A state title last season and is the star of the top-ranked Tigers this year.

She can add going to a big-time college volleyball program to her list of accomplishments. Walch, a junior, committed to the University of Nebraska on Monday night, her coach Krissy Brown Schmidt confirmed.
