Martin County has proven its the best team in the area and with another great showing at a tournament, the Tigers are making their case as one of the best in the state. This past weekend at the Tampa Prep Invitational, they ended Tampa Berkeley Prep’s 11-match win streak. Berkeley Prep was ranked the No. 17 team in the country by ESPNRise.
It was a pretty light week for those who weren’t in the Tampa Prep tournament but it’ll be a busy weekend for the local teams involved in the Boca Raton in Invitational Oct. 16, 17.

The area’s two best teams are gearing up for another major tournament this weekend at the Tampa Bay Invitational, hosted by Tampa Prep. Martin County (15-1), which is fresh off a sweep of Jupiter Tuesday night, is in a pool with Fort Myers, last year’s 6A state champion Timber Creek, and Brandon. Jensen Beach (14-2) is in a pool with Berkeley Prep, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Durant.

The Palm Beach Classic begins this afternoon, featuring teams from all over Palm Beach County.
This year the tournament is hosted by Lake Worth Christian, Royal Palm Beach, and Palm Beach Lakes. Post Top 10 teams Lake Worth Christian (No. 3), No. 6 Wellington, Royal Palm Beach (No. 7) Park Vista (No. 8) are all in Division I, which plays its matches at Royal Palm Beach and Lake Worth Christian.
The Gold Bracket Championship is at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Lake Worth Christian. The Silver Bracket Championship is at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Royal Palm Beach.
Division II is at Palm Beach Lakes. Pool play between American Heritage, Treasure Coast, Jupiter Christian, Forest Hill, Atlantic, Archbishop Carroll, John I Leonard, and Palm Beach Lakes begins at 4 p.m. today. The bracket playoffs begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and the gold and silver bracket championships are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

After winning its bracket two weekends ago at the East Coast Challenge and giving Jensen Beach three close games, John Carroll broke in as No. 10, replacing West Boca Raton, which had a couple of recent losses. Also, Boca Raton Christian has continued its winning ways with just one loss on the season.
There are some good games leading into this weekend’s Palm Beach County Classic. On Tuesday, Boca Raton is at Jupiter, Park Vista is at Royal Palm Beach, and Lake Worth Christian is at Boca Raton Christian. Wellington is at West Boca on Wednesday, and Park Vista goes to Palm Beach Central on Thursday.

What a week! Wellington upset Royal Palm Beach, Spanish River and Jupiter keep rolling, and let’s not forget that epic match between Martin County and Jensen Beach in Saturday’s East Coast Challenge gold bracket finals. There was a lot of movement and a new team, Boca Raton, broke in after wins over West Boca and Palm Beach Central.

Sarah Shifflett, formerly of Lake Worth Christian, is now at Park Vista gearing up for volleyball season with the Cobras, coach Ira Hubschman said.
The junior is a defensive specialist and was a member of the Defenders’ volleyball team that went to states last season, but she’ll be a huge addition to the softball team in the spring.
Shifflett was a solid second baseman for the Defenders’ state semifinals team. She also was a member of the basketball team that won the state title but didn’t start.
Lake Worth Christian names Michael Dudeck new softball coach, Spanish River names Ashley Byrd his replacement

Michael Dudeck, formerly of Spanish River, has been named the new softball coach at Lake Worth Christian, athletic director Jim Harwood announced Thursday. Dudeck replaces Mary McBryde, who coached the Defenders for one season.
UPDATE: And as a result of that move, Spanish River named Dudeck’s former assistant and player, Ashley Byrd, as its new head coach.

Lake Worth Christian softball coach Mary McBryde has resigned after one season at the position.
McBryde is moving to Leesburg. She informed the players of her decision on Sunday.
